KEBUDAYAAN manusia saat ini sedang dijangkiti penyakit yang begitu mencemaskan: keterasingan, kecemasan, keputusasaan, kekerasan, dan krisis eksistensial. Manusia yang sejak abad ke-16 mengalami revolusi pemikiran besar-besaran bersamaan dengan proyek "filsafat modern" dan "abad pencerahan", saat ini justru menghadapi setumpuk persoalan yang diciptakan sendiri secara diam-diam.Semangat humanisme Barat yang dipupuk melalui legitimasi pemikiran para filsuf, ternyata tidak serta merta mengantarkan manusia pada situasi yang damai dan membahagiakan. Di ujung perjalanan, manusia yang oleh para filsuf pencerahan-mengikuti Aristoteles-didefinisikan sebagai makhluk yang berpikir, digiring mengamini produk-produk akal: ilmu pengetahuan, teknologi, logika, dan pragmatisme.

Inilah yang oleh penulis buku SQ ini, Danah Zohar dan Ian Marshall (suami-istri), disebut dengan suatu "kebudayaan yang bodoh secara spiritual". Dalam sangkar kebudayaan yang sedemikian rupa ini, orang-orang dipaksa mengikuti definisi-definisi tentang kesuksesan dan keberhasilan yang semata-mata dipatok berdasar rasionalitas-pragmatis dan materialisme.

Melalui buku ini Zohar dan Marshall membuktikan bahwa aspek spiritual manusia adalah sesuatu yang kurang lebih bersifat kodrati. Ia bahkan mendasari gerak perubahan individu dan kebudayaan dari zaman ke zaman.

Pemikiran Zohar dan Marshall ini bertolak dari ''penemuan'' ukuran kecerdasan yang disebut SQ (spiritual quotient/spiritual intelligence, kecerdasan spiritual). Selama ini kita hanya mengenal ukuran kecerdasan yang disebut IQ (intelligence quotient, kecerdasan intelektual), dan belakangan-sejak pertengahan tahun 1990-an yang dipopulerkan oleh Daniel Goleman-kita mengenal EQ (emotional quotient, kecerdasan emosional).

Menurut Zohar dan Marshall, SQ ini adalah kecerdasan tertinggi yang memiliki daya ubah yang amat tinggi sehingga dapat mengeluarkan manusia dari situasi keterkungkungannya. SQ memungkinkan manusia menjadi kreatif mengubah aturan dan situasi dalam suatu medan tak terbatas.

Ada beberapa bukti ilmiah keberadaan SQ yang dikemukakan Zohar dan Marshall dalam buku ini. Di antaranya adalah penelitian neuropsikolog Michael Persinger di awal tahun 1990-an, dan lebih mutakhir lagi tahun 1997 oleh ahli saraf VS Ramachandran bersama timnya dari Universitas California, yang menemukan adanya God spot ("titik Tuhan") dalam otak manusia.

"Titik Tuhan" ini memang tidak membuktikan keberadaan Tuhan, tetapi menunjukkan kecenderungan otak manusia yang berkembang ke arah pencarian agenda-agenda fundamental dalam hidup, seperti rasa memiliki, masalah makna, dan nilai kehidupan.

Bukti lainnya dikutip dari penelitian neurolog Austria, Wolf Singer, pada tahun 1990-an tentang "problem ikatan" (the binding problem) yang menunjukkan adanya proses saraf dalam otak manusia yang mengarah pada usaha mempersatukan dan memberi makna dalam pengalaman hidup kita.

Paradigma baru SQ ini menawarkan suatu cara pandang yang lebih luas dan utuh (integral dan holistik) terhadap sosok manusia. Bila selama ini tingkat IQ begitu diperhatikan sehingga tak jarang dijadikan sebagai modal awal kesuksesan hidup, maka SQ menggeser itu semua dalam suatu definisi yang sama sekali baru.

Zohar dan Marshall dalam buku ini menjelaskan bahwa cara berpikir model IQ memang merupakan salah satu bagian dari tiga cara berpikir manusia (tiga ragam kecerdasan). Akan tetapi, cara berpikir ini hanyalah seri yang lebih berkaitan dengan proses-proses rasional. Padahal, kehadiran EQ membuktikan bahwa proses-proses rasional itu pada dasarnya juga amat ditentukan secara signifikan oleh emosi (kecerdasan emosional).

SQ kemudian merupakan suatu cara berpikir yang bersifat unitif (menyatukan) dengan kemampuan membingkai-ulang dan mengontekstualisasikan pengalaman hidup manusia. SQ berusaha mengundang manusia pada puncak ketinggian untuk melihat segala persoalan hidup dari perspektif keseluruhan yang lebih luas, lebih tinggi, dan lebih dalam.

SQ menghidupkan semangat bahwa manusia tidak saja hidup dalam dunia, tetapi adalah bagian utuh dunia, sehingga setiap jengkal langkah manusia adalah bagian dari proses universal yang lebih besar.

Pada titik inilah kesadaran diri menjadi salah satu kriteria tertinggi dari kecerdasan spiritual yang tinggi. Kesadaran diri penting bagi tiap individu untuk mengembangkan dan merumuskan motif hidup bermakna, motif mencapai keutuhan, dan dalam menjalani proses perubahan yang tiada henti.

Kesadaran diri juga penting untuk menggali dan menjelajahi potensi spiritual yang dimiliki tiap manusia sehingga akhirnya dapat mengantarkan pada definisi motivasi dan tujuan hidup yang utuh.

Kehadiran buku yang menyajikan pemikiran menarik tentang kecerdasan spiritual ini menjadi penting diapresiasi ketika dilihat dari perspektif paradigmatik yang ditawarkannya. Pada aras paradigmatik, buku ini menghadirkan suatu cara pandang baru terhadap kecerdasan dan struktur psikologis manusia dan membuktikan bahwa ada semacam kodrat spiritual yang melekat dalam diri manusia yang penting untuk dikelola, karena di situlah sebenarnya napas kehidupan dapat ditemukan.

Upaya untuk melirik aspek spiritual dari sosok manusia ini menjadi penting ketika arah kebudayaan saat ini seperti tidak menyisakan ruang bagi manusia untuk berpikir dan mempertimbangkan segala sesuatu dari perspektif spiritual yang cerdas.

Pada satu sisi hal ini ditandai dengan kebudayaan materialistik dan konsumeristik yang semakin mendunia dan mengepung hidup keseharian manusia; pada sisi yang lain ditandai dengan cara pengungkapan spiritualitas yang tidak cerdas.

Agama sebagai salah satu corong spiritualitas belakangan ini nyaris dikebiri, dan hanya untuk kepentingan kelompok serta kekuasaan, sehingga malah melahirkan kekerasan.

Oleh karena itu, perspektif baru tentang kecerdasan spiritual ini pada akhirnya juga mendorong segenap umat beragama untuk bersikap lebih cerdas dan dewasa terhadap spirit(ualitas) agamanya masing-masing dengan bersikap yang terbuka, toleran, inklusif, serta jujur dan tulus. Dengan demikian, perspektif kecerdasan spiritual ini sebenarnya juga dapat mempertemukan berbagai tradisi keagamaan dalam suatu wilayah dialog yang lebih terbuka.

CATATAN kritis yang dapat diberikan terhadap buku ini adalah ketika dalam beberapa bagian buku ini berulang kali menyebut-nyebut ketiadaan hubungan antara pemikiran tentang kecerdasan spiritual ini dengan agama. Pandangan ini adalah pandangan khas Barat yang, katakanlah, "sekuler".

Selain itu, buku ini juga mirip dengan seri buku psikologi populer yang penuh dengan janji-janji dan penerapan praktis untuk meningkatkan dan memanfaatkan kecerdasan spiritual itu sendiri.

Selebihnya, buku ini tetap layak didiskusikan untuk mencermati arah baru perkembangan dunia psikologi yang seperti mulai saling menyapa dengan tradisi spiritual atau agama. Perjumpaan epistemologis ini diharapkan dapat menjadi suatu modal awal yang baik untuk arah pembangunan masa depan umat manusia di seluruh dunia yang damai dan sejahtera.

In this dream Iâ??m a forest ranger in a Tolkien inspired world. Iâ??m walking in a deep dark forest. From the very start of the dream I know that Iâ??m looking for something. Something inside of me guides me through the dark paths of the forest. When I pass a big tree I hear a bright voice above me. Itâ??s my friend Amanda in a dryad form standing on a thick tree branch wearing a green tunic and she was aiming at me with a crossbow. â??I know what you seek ranger. Follow me I shall take you to the lightâ?. She walks in front of me for quite a while. Suddenly we reach a clearing and on big stone stand a person surrounded by light. The person is an elf version of the French pop singer Lorie. She says something about a quest I most take care off.

Then I wake up.

Those with higher AQs perceive they have significantly more control and influence in adverse situations than do those with lower AQs. Even in situations that appear overwhelming or out of their hands, those with higher AQs find some facet of the situation they can influence. Those with lower AQs respond as if they have little or no control and often give up.

Accountability is the backbone of action. Those with higher AQs hold themselves accountable for dealing with situations regardless of their cause. Those with lower AQs deflect accountability and most often feel victimized and helpless.

To what extent does the adversity extend beyond the situation at hand?

Keeping the fallout under control and limiting the reach of adversity is essential for efficient and effective problem solving. Those with higher AQs keep setbacks and challenges in their place, not letting them infest the healthy areas of their work and lives. Those with lower AQs tend to catastrophize, allowing a setback in one area to bleed into other, unrelated areas and become destructive.

E = Endurance

How long will the adversity endure?

Seeing beyond even enormous difficulties is an essential skill for maintaining hope. Those with higher AQs have the uncanny ability to see past the most interminable difficulties and maintain hope and optimism. Those with lower AQs see adversity as dragging on indefinitely, if not permanently.
